Dette er en bog om det ydre af Thorvaldsens Museum - om frisen på museets udvendige mure, som fremstiller scener fra museets tilblivelse.
Thorvaldsens Museum åbnede i København i 1848. Den store danske skulptør, Bertel Thorvaldsen, havde besluttet sig for at donere sine egne værker og sin samling af øvrige værker til byen under forudsætning af, at der ville blive bygget et museum til formålet.
Museet blev dekoreret med en farvestrålende frise, der afbilder Thorvaldsens triumferende ankomst til København sammen med sine værker fra atelieret i Rom. Den dramatiske frise - udformet af Jørgen Sonne - vakte stor opsigt i datiden ikke mindst på grund af sine tydelige politiske undertoner.
"When it opened on 18 September 1848, Thorvaldsens Museum represented something radically new in Copenhagen. Not only was it the first dedicated museum building in Denmark, but with its unusual architectonic idiom, its colours and its position right in the centre of the city it was also so totally visible and different that people could only be amazed and fascinated - while af few were uncomprehending and dismissive. [...] In addition to that, Thorvaldsens Museum represents the almost complete oeuvre of the best known Danish sculptor of all time, while it also contains Thorvaldsen's extensive collections both of Classical art and of paintings by internationally recognised artists of his own time. That is to say that - as the first public museum in Denmark - Thorvaldsens Museum was a museum of international contemporary art right from the beginning"(fra forord af Stig Miss).
Med stor viden og entusiasme fører Henderson sin læser gennem frisens fortælling om mesterens ankomst til sit hjemland. Stilhistorisk viser Henderson, hvorledes frisen er blevet inspireret af klassiske modeller, og kan henregnes blandt de allerfineste neoklassicistiske værker.
John Henderson er professor i klassisk filologi ved University of Cambridge og Fellow ved King's College.
