Bogen giver et bredt og repræsentativt billede af skandinavisk og international forskning i erotisk litteratur. Det vanskelige forhold mellem det erotiske og det litterære er et tilbagevendende tema i vesterlandsk litteratur. Vores behov for at tale, skrive og læse om kærlighed har resulteret i en rig tradition som spænder fra teoretiske og filosofiske diskussioner om Eros til romaner og kærlighedspoesi. En tradition præget af den klassiske arv, men samtidig under stadig udvikling og omskrivning.
Bogen giver et indblik i en række diskussioner om traditionen 'at læse og skrive det erotiske'. Hovedvægten er lagt på den klassiske filologi, men andre bidragydere repræsenterer byzantinske studier, iranske sprog, idéhistorie og litteraturvidenskab.
I bogen behandles så forskellige tekster som Platons Symposium og Catuls digte, antikke byzantinske og persiske romaner og værker af Petrarca og Goethe.
Alle tekster analyseres ud fra forskellige perspektiver, men med det fælles mål at belyse hvordan kærlighed formes, konstrueres og manipuleres af forfattere og ikke mindst af læseren selv.
"The inarticulation of love, then, is what makes it worth pursuing as literature and, at the same time, what implacably ties the text, its writer, and its reader together. And having moved from Plato in classical Athens, via romances in East and West, Byzantine saints and emperors, to twentieth-century scholars, this is where we end up: we are all readers - whether loving readers or readers of love - with our own specific interests and interpretive focus. So in a modern 'all-inclusive philology', the pleasure of the text must never be forgotten. Poetics of love and erotics of reading are, in the end, all about Eros"(fra Introduction).
