En rigt illustreret skildring af tilblivelsen af en bemærkelsesværdig bygning - tilbygningen til Darwin-Centre ved Natural History Museum i London. Bogen er en fortælling om hvorledes en vision udtænkt i en strøm af kreative tanker blev omsat til konkret virkelighed. Den fortæller også om arkitekternes overvejelser for at finde frem til løsninger på de tekniske udfordringer de blev stillet over for undervejs, og den beskriver aspekter af byggeprocessen.
Konkurrencen om Darwin Centre II blev udskrivet i 2001 og er blandt de mest prestigefyldte konkurrencer, vundet af danske arkitekter nogensinde.
Det var C.F.Møllers Tegnestue med Anna Maria Indrio som ansvarshavende der vandt med en mægtig ellipsoide hvis præcise entasis understreges af facadens tynde søjler. Den store form, som anes fra Queensgate har givet navn til bygningen 'the Cocoon'.
"The reception of the building has beeen favourable, even enthusiastic, with the vast majority of the reviewers. This is probably because the architects have succeeded in incorporating the many and often contradictory demands of the building in a perfectly lucid and readable overall form, the idiom of which is downplayed to a minimum so that nothing is allowed to disturb the fine balance between the giant Cocoon and the delicate grid of crossbars that it plays off. Although taciturn, this is a minimalism which speaks volumes. On closer inspection, the Cocoon proves to be an extremely complex three-dimensional geometric body, the exact shape of which is determined by aesthetic and optical effects just like the entasis with which the ancient Greeks designed their columns. [...] Like the ultra fine threads of a real silk Cocoon, expansion joints are crisply incised into the soaring, curved flanks, and the surrounding atrium is bathed in a soft light, like a soaring vault of a cathedral or railway station. Yet unlike many so-called 'iconic' buildings, this is not just form making for its own sake. A soft machine, shaped for its function and made possible by computers and mathematics, the Cocoon embodies the evocative ideal of fusing the biological with the mechanical, a notion that has persisted throughout the Modern period. It also demonstrates how technology can be reconciled with nature and seeks to engage the two forces in a harmonious coexistence reflecting an organic integrity of form and function"(fra forord og indledende kapitel).
Bygningen blev indviet i efteråret 2009, og bogen om Darwin Centre er en fortælling om hvilke visioner arkitekterne havde da de tegnede konkurrenceprojektet. Og om den kamp der fulgte for at realisere projektet så ideen ikke blev kvalt af praktiske hensyn. Men den fortæller også om de tilsyneladende tekniske umuligheder der gennem utraditionelle og ikke tidligere forsøgte løsninger har rykket grænsen for det mulige. Således er Cocoonen det hidtil største sprøjtestøbte betonobjekt, og det er udført med en præcision som for få år siden ville have været umuligt at bygge. I mange henseender har Darwin-Centre sat nye standarder for teknologiens formåen, men også for samspillet mellem arkitektur og udstilling.
