Denne udgivelse behandler dele af den europæiske musiks tidlige historie, idet den ser nærmere på de byzantinske traditioner på det musikalske område.
The purpose of this volume is above all to serve as a key to the deciphering of melodies written in the Middle Byzantine notation. In addition, it offers an introduction to Byzantine chant in a wider sense, dealing with topics such as chant transmission before the neumes, the varieties of Byzantine musical notations, words and music in Byzantine chant, Byzantine and Western neumatic notations, modes, melody and intervals, and the development of the musical genres.
'Den middelbyzantinske notation' blev taget i brug omkring år 1150, og det er den tidligste form for byzantinske noder der i dag kan transskriberes med nogenlunde sikkerhed. Derfor kan det musikalske indhold i musikhåndskrifter fra før 1150 kun forstås gennem middelbyzantinske versioner af de ældre kirkesange. Den middelbyzantinske notation vedblev at være de græsk-ortodokse kirkers foretrukne musikalske skriftsystem helt frem til begyndelsen af 1800-tallet.
Formålet med denne udgivelse er først og fremmest at tjene som nøgle til dechifreringen af den byzantinske kirkemusiks nodesystem, nærmere bestemt 'den middelbyzantinske neume-notation'. Desuden introducerer bogen den byzantinske kirkesang i bredere forstand og behandler emner som mundtlig overlevering af kirkemusikken før notationens opfindelse, de forskellige typer af musikalske notationer i Byzans, samordningen af tekst og melodi i byzantinsk musik, den byzantinske nodeskrift sammenlignet med den vesteuropæiske middelalders neume-skrift, kirketonearterne, formler og intervaller, samt udviklingen af de forskellige kirkemusikalske genrer.
Christian Troelsgård præsenterer i bogen den byzantinske kirkesangs forskellige genrer, spændende fra munkeklostrenes enkle salmodi til Hagia Sofia-kirkens stærkt forsirede katedralsang. Læseren får et førstehåndsindtryk af kilderne til den byzantinske musik, idet bogen indeholder fotografiske gengivelser af en serie daterede og lokaliserede musikhåndskrifter. Endvidere præsenteres mere end 60 musikeksempler med transskription til moderne linjenotation og en detaljeret bibliografi.
Bogen er tænkt som en opdatering og uddybning af H.J.W. Tillyards Handbook of the Middle Byzantine Musical Notation (København 1935), en af de første udgivelser i serien Monumenta Musicae Byzantinae. Udgivelsen opsummerer således mere end 75 års forskning på et vigtigt, men stadig temmelig ukendt område af den europæiske musiks tidlige historie.
"The general approach to Byzantine chant has, rightly, shifted from exclusively looking at the chant pieces as 'works of art' in a 'closed score', towards an acknowledgement of the notated chants as witnesses to an organic musical culture. In addition, more emphasis is laid on the relationship between text and music (Chapter I), the historical development of the Byzantine notations and the music they represent (Chapter III), palaeographical aspects (especially Chapter V and Appendix), and, finally, on the differentiation of the notational styles in the various chant genres (especially Chapter VII). Byzantine chant is rarely included in the curricula of music history, at least outside the Eastern European countries. However, as a counterpoint to Western plainchant, and because of its importance in relation to such crucial events as the development of modal theory and neumatic notations in European music, the Byzantine chant tradition deserves more attention than it is usually given. It is my hope that the present book will inspire students and teachers to pick up the topic, and that they after digging out again the MMB facsimile volumens from probably rarely visited and dusty library shelves will begin to gain new insights into this fascinating, but little-known, branch of medieval chant"(Preface).
